Mobile takes center stage in post-Thanksgiving sales

In this week’s mobile news update we’re covering the highlights from this year’s record-breaking Black Friday and Cyber Monday mobile sales. In 2016, post-Thanksgiving holiday sales reached new heights. Many consumers chose to buy online instead of waiting in lines to snag great deals. Here’s a recap of how mobile commerce performed this week.

  • Amazon reported that Thanksgiving has now become one of the busiest mobile shopping days on the retailer’s site in the U.S. In fact, Mobile commerce accounted for a record 36 percent of e-commerce total sales this year.
  • Retailers turned to email marketing to attract mobile shoppers this year. Email marketing analysis firm eDataSource reports that more than 35,000 Black Friday-themed email campaigns were mailed and about 24,000 Cyber Monday campaigns were mailed for post-Thanksgiving sales this year.
  • Smartphones accounted for nearly 70 percent of Thanksgiving Day sales traffic. ChannelAdvisor reported that,for the first time, mobile e-commerce orders surpassed desktop orders, with 53 percent of all orders on Thanksgiving Day completed on a mobile device.
