7 mobile trends to look for at CES 2017

By Kristina Smith

With the holidays quickly coming to a close and this season’s excitement fading, those in the tech world are still buzzing with eager anticipation as one of the most notable tech conferences approaches. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 will be taking place in Las Vegas from January 5 – 8, 2017.  Every year, CES attendees get a glimpse into the future of consumer technology and this year’s conference promises to be full of revolutionary innovations. This year will mark the event’s 50th anniversary and will showcase many innovative and thrilling tech trends and products that will set the stage for 2017.

Here are seven of the mobile trends we are on the lookout for this year at CES:

Augmented reality and virtual reality

2016 brought with it the introduction of many intriguing augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) products, but 2017 promises to take these innovations to the next level. CES will be highlighting new AR and VR enabled products such as mobile devices, desktops and mini PCs that boast 4K gaming and virtual reality functionalities. There are also rumors of some Pokémon Go-inspired AR games at CES 2017.

Foldable phones

2017 may also bring new smartphone features that we have never seen before. Some reports state that two new Samsung phones with folding screens could be unveiled at CES. The new smartphone, which is part of a rumored project called “Project Valley,” is said to have a flexible display panel that can be folded into a book.

Wearable tech

Wearable technology is forecasted to become more personalized and advanced in 2017. Think advances in wearable healthcare, virtual reality and even wearables for pets. There is also a push for invisible tech which means making the technology in wearables even less noticeable and more seamlessly integrated into our everyday accessories. Expect to see many new gadgets on display at the CES 2017 Wearables Marketplace. A few of the notable players that we may see surprising reveals from include FitBit, Garmin and Amazfit.

Mobile apps powered by emerging innovators

With mobile usage on a steady climb, mobile applications have become increasingly important. The focus for 2017 will be creating a seamless experience between apps. In 2017, the focus is not just on apps that work well on smartphones. Mobile apps are now required to work across wearables, smartphones, smart cars and so much more. CES 2017 will include a Mobile Apps Showdown, where app producers have four minutes to demo their app. This year, as part of Mobile Apps Showdown, there will be a 10Under20: Young Innovators to Watch segment. We can’t wait to see what these young innovators are doing in mobile at CES this year.

Connectionless IoT

2017 is set to be the year of the connectionless IoT. So what does a “connectionless” IoT look like? Connectivity isn’t about opening an app and pairing devices. It should work all the time. Representatives from Bluetooth SIG will reveal how companies are collaborating to make this a reality. Expect to hear more on the future trends, consumer demand, and expectations for the IoT at CES 2017.

Mobile wallets

The rise of digital banking is challenging traditional financial institutions to prioritize immediacy, flexibility and customized services for consumers. At CES 2017, panelists will explore how companies can revitalize mobile wallet technology and explore the opportunities and challenges that await in the coming year. Expect to learn more about how companies plan to create more on-demand mobile banking experiences for consumers in 2017.

The leap to 5G

“5G” is still a bit of an enigma to many. It is something heavily talked about but not yet fully realized. Some question whether it is even a realistic expectation for the near future. 5G is an evolution of wireless technology that promises to deliver much faster video over consumer devices like smartphones and tablets. It is also sought after for its ability to support new IoT and augmented reality applications. That said, there are still several hoops for organizations to jump through before delivering a 5G world to consumers. Experts at CES 2017 will explain the state of mobile and how we can take the leap to 5G.
